CNC Machined Radiator Cap Part III

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The radiator cap turned out much better than expected.  The emblem was painted red and then filled with clear resin for an interesting effect.  The design is flush with the rest of the cap but edges can still be seen below the surface for a 3d look.  I’ll experiment with a few more designs and considering setting up a shopping cart on the website, provided there’s enough interest.

CNC Machined Radiator Cap Part II

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

I’m another step closer to having a custom radiator cap for the GTO and Trans Am.  For the GTO I’ve decided to go with the old Indian head logo.  For the Trans Am I think I’ll play with the idea of a phoenix logo.  I experimented with filling the Indian head cap with colored resin.  I was trying for an amber color similar to the 50’s hood ornaments.  Instead it came out gold which looks good against the polished aluminum.  I’ll keep experimenting until I find a color that I like.  I’ll try red paint under clear resin next.  If anyone has other interesting ideas please feel free to submit a comment on this post.

CNC Machined Radiator Cap Part I

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Today I reached a milestone on a side project.  I’ve been converting a manual milling machine to a CNC over the past year and a half.   One of the main reasons was to make small custom pieces and accents for the Trans Am and GTO.  I finally reached the point to where I could make some decent 2D profiles.  I still have a little work before I can make 3D profiles.  One of the first parts I plan to make is a custom CNC radiator cap with the Pontiac Indian Head emblem.  The pictures below show the first test cut to make sure the program I created was working properly.  I’ve purchased a smaller tool which will tighten up the profile.  I’ll post more pictures of the finished product when it’s finished in the next week or two.  If anyone is interested in a radiator cap or other custom Pontiac themed machining please leave a comment on this post for more details.
