Orange Peel

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

A serious amount of orange peel can be seen in the first picture below. In this case it was the result of spraying in a low light environment. Without proper lighting it’s difficult to ensure you get enough paint build up such that it self levels but not so much that it causes runs. Fortunately, much of this can be fixed with enough time and sand paper.  The panel was lightly sanded with 1500 grit paper and buffed. This process was repeated three times to smooth the surface.

More Body Panels

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

The deck lid and doors were painted and clear along with new wheel flares from YearOne.   The wheel flares are fiberglass instead of factory urethane.  The purpose is to eliminate the factory welting that fills the gap between the factory flare and body panels.  The YearOne flares were a decent fit out of the box but did require some minor modification as expected.

Unmasked and Outside

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

Finally unmasked the car today and took it outside to inspect the new paint in what was left of the sunlight.  Paint looks good so far.  There’s a couple of areas that need some more sanding and polishing but overall pretty good.

Sanding and Polishing

Some sanding then polishing with 3M products.  There’s more to come after the car is completely assembled.

Custom Graphics Complete

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

The Trans Am was sprayed with three coats of clear to allow for for sanding.  The phoenix came out pretty good.  I would’ve liked to go slightly lighter on the dark gold paint so it only really appeared in the sun, but it’s permanent now.  I’m still happy with the outcome though.  The doors and fenders can go on in the next couple of weekends after sanding and polishing.

So I’m flipping through the new High Performance Pontiac magazine (Feb 2012) and I see a letter published that I wrote in response to a reader’s question about painting Trans Am graphics.  Very cool.  Excellent timing too.
