Steering Components

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

There hasn’t been a great deal to post in the last couple of weeks. Much of the time has been dealing with the cold and waiting for the shop to warm up. The subframe is completely apart. A spring compressor was rented from AutoZone to help disassemble the front control arms. A can of mineral spirits was purchased from Home Depot to help break down the grease on the steering parts. A Rubbermaid tub was used as a makeshift parts washer. This week will continue with stripping grease from the steering components and getting ready to sand blast.

Subframe Disassembly

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Today the old 301 motor was removed from the subframe. It was then rolled into the garage in preparation for further disassembly, cleaning, and paint. The steering box looks to have been leaking badly around in input shaft. I found a rebuild kit at AutoZone for about $20. I’ll post pictures of the attempted rebuild when I get to it. Anyone have any experience with steering box rebuilds?
